Who are you?
0L is a community-driven open source project. There is no corporate sponsor, no venture capital, no foundation. Everyone involved in this project is here because we believe in the power of decentralized architecture and community governance.
How is this project governed?
The community will set the path for the project. If you want a voice in the project, all you need to do is participate. If you don’t like what’s happening with 0L, don’t sit on the sidelines. Get involved, use your influence, help us build a better project.
How did 0L get started?
0L is a fork of the open source codeset that was created by the Diem Association for the Diem network (previously known as “Libra.”). Work on the project began in 2019. You can learn more about the technology and how it has been modified for use as a public network by visiting the Technology Overview page.
Why were you working privately for so long?
This is not true. We actually worked publicly the whole time since we forked the project. We were never private, just quiet. Some people joined early, and volunteered time, others checked it out and decided not to contribute.
What’s with the emphasis on labor?
This project is experimenting with a more labor centric approach to rewards; it might be an utter failure, but it also could work out that the funds distribute more widely then you see in other networks as that labor ramps up. Given that its an experiment, analytics matter a lot. We have a number of people working toward making whole thing more transparent; in practice if we want a community driven project then we need to a) make the state of the system observable and b) make it possible for the community to make changes (by building stuff)
When was Genesis?
Genesis occurred on 21 October 2021.
Why did you wait two weeks before opening up?
We wanted to make sure the network would actually stay up. Since by the protocol no validator could be onboarded within 14 days anyways, we took that as an opportunity to test. The network actually had to abort 3 times before this final genesis worked. So, that’s the reason
Why won’t you tell us who you are?
If you are an early bitcoin fan, you know that privacy matters and we need to respect people’s wishes for it. There may be people in the community that fear regulatory or corporate reprisals. We need to respect that. Our server rules have a hard line on Doxing: don’t try to find people’s identity and post them, that’s a ban without warning. This will not surprise you if you are a long-time crypto contributor. Plus, you shouldn’t trust us for our words. Just our actions. All blockchains are an experiment. Eventually you will likely find out who we all are. Even Otto. This is an experiment in finding common ground and wanting to build something collectively.
Validators
Why do you have only 100 validators?
0L is not a proof of work chain. It works differently, closest to Cosmos/Tendermint ecosystem chains.
This is a limitation of BFT consensus. After about 100-120 nodes in a network: the mempool, block propagation, network, throughput drops down dramatically. To make the political layer work, all PoS network resort to hard caps on the quorum set. They do this by limiting by proof of stake if you get in.
Why do validators make so much more than Carpers?
In BFT networks the validator is the node that writes to the blockchain. Making the network safe with economics is tricky, especially if you want to stick to real economics. Otto has written a lot about this.
Who was allowed to join Genesis?
Anyone that knew about the project was able to submit a pull request with their nodes to be included in genesis. Not everybody involved in the project wanted to be in genesis (for different reasons, some related to regulation some related to privacy).
Who have you onboarded since Genesis?
This depended on each of the validators, but mostly people seemed to give preference to people who had actively been working on the protocol and who didn’t join genesis.

What do I need to run Carpe?
Windows and Mac are the only two platforms supported at the moment.

Why do the Carpe users make so little?
The Carpe app is a way of bootstrapping identity on the network. We use Delay Towers as a sybil resistance mechanism (not sybil-proof) for many purposes including consensus. This is a way to get started on 0L. It’s low effort work, and it doesn’t add to security of the network. There are proposals to do this differently with Delegation. We make it so that people can join the project easily contribute something WITHOUT NEEDING TO PAY, and will hopefully one day contribute labor.
